AusCheck provides background checking services for security-sensitive critical infrastructure sectors in Australia. The AusCheck Issuing Authority will also manage all aviation and maritime security identification cards (ASICs and MSICs) by mid-2025.
AusCheck ensures the identity of people, and coordinates their criminal and national security background checks. This occurs to determine their eligibility for unsupervised access to secure areas of infrastructure and supply chains in the aviation and maritime sectors, national health facilities, and major national events.
AusCheck’s services support our mission to create a safer Australia by protecting critical infrastructure from trusted and malicious-insider risks such as cyber-attacks, terrorism and organised crime.
AusCheck legislation
The AusCheck Act 2007 and AusCheck Regulations 2017 form a framework authorising AusCheck to provide a background checking service. The framework also governs how AusCheck:
- communicates information with its background checking partners
- provides certainty in how AusCheck information is managed and held.
It outlines a range of administrative matters for the operation of the AusCheck schemes, such as the collection and use of your information, as it applies to the:
- Aviation Transport Security Act 2004
- Maritime Transport and Offshore Facilities Security Act 2003
- National Health Security Act 2007
- Security of Critical Infrastructure Act 2018
- any other Act that expressly requires, or permits, a background check to be conducted under the AusCheck scheme.
The Regulations cover:
- information required for an application
- decisions that can be made
- advice that may be given
- fees that may be charged
- review rights
- information required following a background check, and
- guidelines for the use and disclosure of information.
