Offshore facilities
An offshore facility is a facility located offshore which is used to extract petroleum (oil and gas). This is defined in the
Maritime Transport and Offshore Facilities Security Act 2003.
Offshore facility operators are required to have and comply with a maritime security plan.
Offshore facilities include:
- any structure, located in an offshore area, used in operations or activities associated with the extraction of petroleum
- any vessel, located in the offshore area, used in operations or activities associated with the extraction of petroleum
- any floating storage unit, located in the offshore area, constructed or modified to accept petroleum, that is capable of storing or delivering petroleum products to another ship or pipeline.
An offshore area is an area in:
- Australian waters
- the exclusive economic zone of Australia
- the sea over the continental shelf of Australia.
