Aviation security incidents must be reported to the department under Part 6 of the Aviation Transport Security Act 2004.
Aviation industry participants are required to report aviation security incidents as soon as possible.
You must report
within 24 hours of first becoming aware of the incident.
Reports must be in writing and can be made by completing the aviation security incident report form.
We recommend you use the form as it contains all the compulsory information for a complete report.
Reports can also be made by emailing
transport.security@homeaffairs.gov.au.
An initial report may be made by telephone, but must be followed up with a written report within 24 hours:
- 1300 791 581 (in Australia)
- +61 2 5127 8995 (from outside Australia)
What the report must contain
The report must contain as much information as possible at the time of making the report.
Within 24 hours you must provide in writing any extra compulsory information that you become aware of regarding the incident.
The formal requirements for making a report and all the information required is specified in the Aviation Transport Security (Incident Reporting) Instrument 2018.
A report that does not contain all the required information is deemed under subsection 107(3) of the Aviation Transport Security Act to not have been made.
A just culture approach to reporting
We have implemented a 'just culture' approach to aviation security incident reporting. This means industry participants will not face enforcement actions provided:
- they voluntarily self-report the incident
- they assure us they have taken corrective actions to effectively mitigate the risk of recurrence, if asked to do so
- the incident was not the result of recklessness on their behalf.
