Overview
The Australian Government has imposed air cargo prohibitions that prevent or restrict the movement of air cargo into Australia from specific countries of concern. These measures are to ensure the safety and security of the Australian community and the aviation sector.
The prohibitions were implemented through legislative instruments made by the former Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development and the Minister for Home Affairs under subsection 65B(1) of the Aviation Transport Security Act 2004.
The Department of Home Affairs administers these instruments, which are summarised below.
Afghanistan | Prohibitions only apply to air cargo that is not examined and cleared at an approved last port of call. |
Bangladesh | Permitted entry provided that before cargo is loaded onto an aircraft, it has been examined and cleared at a European Commission certified facility. |
Egypt | Prohibitions only apply to air cargo that is not examined and cleared at an approved last port of call. |
Somalia | Prohibited from importation. |
Syria | Prohibited from importation. |
Turkey | Prohibition applies only to electromechanical devices that weigh over 1 kilogram. |
Yemen | Prohibited from importation. |
