Critical Infrastructure Security Excellence Workshops 2024

The Department of Home Affairs hosted a series of workshops around Australia’s capital cities in 2024.

Critical Infrastructure Security Excellence Workshops 2024

The Critical Infrastructure Security Excellence Workshops included presentations, panel discussions and collaborative activities from industry and government representatives. The workshops covered the latest information and practical advice relating to the protection of Australia’s critical infrastructure.

Highlights included:

  • a lessons learned presentation from DP World on their cyber incident in 2023
  • expert industry panel discussions
  • a deep dive activity.

The below video is a lookback at the Melbourne workshop which was held on 26 June 2024.

Sally Pfeiffer: Today we're at the Melbourne Critical Infrastructure Security Excellence Workshop and it's one in a series that we're doing nationally. What we're doing is really looking to engage the industries and the sectors around critical infrastructure and really hear from industry about what's happening in the environment and how we can be of more assistance to them.

Swee Yue Tan: It is good to seeing how the government is there to guide and to enable industry and to hear from other peers our common concerns.

Garran Jones: What's important is continuing the engagement with government to understand how we can help and doing things such as today and sharing some of those learnings and experiences is all part of that. How can we share those experiences across industry? But they're also relevant to people outside our industry so I think the government can help open some of those doors to cross sector so that we can start to share those messages.

Justine Jones: These workshops are a great opportunity to work with industry about the uplift that's required to both understand our legislative framework, but more importantly, to start kind of connecting and talking about the interconnectedness and interdependencies of the risks in their own areas.

Hannah Tan: I think it’s the importance of all the different sectors, especially across industry, coming together in the same room to, if nothing else, have a broader understanding of where we sit and our broader context of critical infrastructure.

Sally Pfeiffer: The industry players that have been here today, have had an amazing engagement with us around the issues and their concerns and what they're seeing. It's not just about cyber. Cyber is one of the critical factors. It's actually about the entirety of the risk sectors.

David Taylor: Absolutely, I would encourage others, cannot overstate the importance of just having a big group of people from all over the place in the one space talking to each other is well 80% of Emergency Management is about communication and a lot of that's happening here today.

Justine Jones: It's incredibly important that we listen to our stakeholders because this is a very complex policy framework that we're trying to implement here. And so these workshops are a great opportunity for people to start sharing experiences. And hopefully can take some of the learnings back into their own workplaces as they think about their own risk management frameworks.
